Our Garden

Our Garden

ok, ok... I have heard from a few of you that you had almost given up hope on me adding any more updates. I will make more of an effort and write more. Now that the weather is nice out there will be more to talk about.

About 2 weeks ago we mad a trip to the local landfill and picked up some compost for the garden. If you live in one of the neighboring cities compost is free and we are fortunate enough to have some friends in one of those cities. My guess was that one truck-load would fill the planter box and my vision was to back the truck right up to it. Well, it ended up taking three truck loads and we had to move every ounce of compost by wheelbarrow.

That's a lot of dirt!!

We let everything sit for about a week and continued to ensure that the ground kept moist. We were fortunate that we had a few major storms roll through the area and did not have to fire up the sprinklers.

Meanwhile, the tomatoes and bell peppers that we started in the house were itching to be put into the ground. So the first day that we had good weather we spent 1/2 the day planting and building cages for the younger plants. The cages were made by cutting coated fencing into small sections and cutting the two bottom pieces off so we could push them into the ground. We were able to close the cage by cutting the wire so that we had three pieces of wire to act as hooks.

Look how big our plants are getting

Traci went to the Better Homes and Gardens website to find a layout and we followed it as closely as possible. We planted the following: Watermelon, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Peas, Radish, Lettuce, Bell Peppers, Carrots, Swiss Chard and Asparagus.

We added 4 lights for some night time ambiance

I will provide updates and pictures of the veggies as they start to appear.
Take care and we hope your garden makes you as happy as ours does!
